Inviting Marc Berthoumieux for an artist residency means offering students the opportunity to meet one of the most distinctive figures of the accordion in contemporary French jazz.

An accordionist, composer and arranger, he has been developing a highly personal body of work for more than thirty years, at the crossroads of jazz, classical music, French popular music and world music.

His musical universe is distinguished by sensitive writing, a constant exploration of tone colours and great freedom in the dialogue between instruments. His career offers an opportunity to explore with students the different dimensions of the musician’s profession: performing, arranging, improvising, listening, building a collective sound and bringing a work to life on stage.

For the 2026–2027 season, the Nadia and Lili Boulanger Conservatory is welcoming him for a residency bringing together Jean Ribeiro’s accordion class and the jazz department coordinated by Pierre Carrié. The residency is also open to accordionists from conservatories across the Paris network, as well as to students from the Villejuif and Issy-les-Moulineaux conservatories.

From their first encounter with the artist to the final concert, the students will be at the heart of the creative process, working with him to experience the journey from a musical idea to the stage.
